Blocks come in many shapes, colors, and sizes so preschoolers can use them to learn with their senses. Preschool activity with blocks can also helps to develop creativity and problem solving ability. As you guide the preschoolers during block playing, talk with them about the shapes, the block position (on top of, underneath, behind), how can we balance blocks while we are building, and the blocks counting. look on for activities that help preschoolers to explore many concepts in early childhood education.
Playing math with Block
There are several ways to teach math skills with blocks. Children can put them in groups according to shape, size, and color. blocks can be made to help preschoolers understand serial order (first, next, last). In this activity, preschoolers learn that blocks can be used as a tool for measuring.
You can use many blocks in the same size. Challenge the children to use the blocks for measuring their fingers by placing small blocks in a row next to the finger. Count the blocks and write it down. you can measure your finger as well, and then compare. Help the children measure parts of their bodies, such as their legs, feet, and even the size of toys with blocks. Discuss what you are doing and ask questions like; "What is the longest thing you have measured? The shortest? what else can we measure with blocks do you think?"
Another nice activity is to make a puzzle with blocks, that helps the preschoolers to know more about shapes and problem solving. put some blocks of different sizes and shapes on cardboard paper. Then trace with a pencil around every single block to draw an outline of it's shape. Remove the blocks and ask the children to put each block back in it's correct place. During putting the blocks into the puzzle, name their shapes.
Create a story with Blocks
Dramatic playing and creativity just goes with playing with blocks. Turn the preschoolers into little contractors and make them build a city with blocks. Place the blocks on the floor and ask them to build a town. Remember that blocks are open-ended materials and there is no 'right or wrong' way to use them. Think about adding props like toy people, cars, trees, etc. to make the town look real. Talking about the process while children are playing helps to learn. Making up a story about this town would be very helpful, so ask many of questions to help the preschoolers create the play.
Letter Recognition During Block Play
For this activity alphabet blocks are needed (wooden or plastic). Preschoolers are naturally proud of their names, and using alphabet blocks can help children in learning the alphabet letters. Print the child's name in large letters on a paper and invite him to trace the letters with his finger. Then put the alphabet blocks on the table and make him try to pull out the block letters that match with his name. let him put the blocks on top of the written letters. Show him how the block letters match with the letters on the paper.
Make Music With Blocks
Give each child two blocks and ask them how they can make sounds with blocks. Explain to them how can you use the blocks to clap. Create a rhythms by clapping the blocks several times. Use some recorded music and use the blocks to clap a cheer! For a different sound, tape a piece of sandpaper to one side of each block. Show the children how to rub the blocks together to make sounds.
Preschool activities for blocks are endless as there are many creative ways to build and use blocks in the classroom. Block play is also very developmental as it aids children in both fine and gross motor skill building.
